Whenever the holidays come, anyone makes sure that they have Christmas ornaments prepared. These decors have been the known accessories to always accompany the cheerful spirit of Christmas. Then again, even though these ornaments have been an inseparable part of our holidays, most of us are still unknowledgeable as to what they really are besides decors.

Christmas was an occasion named by Christians to celebrate th birth of the savior Jesus Christ, but this simple tradition gave birth to more traditions.. One of them is the use of the so-called Christmas ornaments, which are primarily made as decorative additions for the Christmas tree. But when you think about it, what do these ornaments really have to do with Christmas? Do their shapes and colors have any connection to Jesus’ birth?

It was in the 1800s when the use of the Christmas tree and its corresponding ornaments has grown extremely popular. Back then, the main types of ornaments are in the form of fruits, most specifically apples and grapes. Since both of these fruits have the same color scheme of green and red, and they are also both circular in form, they were the easiest to use for decorating. Since then, red and green became the basic color schemes of Christmas and the spherical forms of common decorations begun.

It was from this tradition that the 'bauble' or the Christmas balls was born, bringing with them the tradition colors and the circular shape. It was the Germans that introduced them as a replacement for using fruits. But Christmas balls were only just the beginning to more intricate and fascinating forms of Christmas ornaments. After the Christmas balls, another icon in the form of the so-called 'Santa Claus' came into the picture. And since then, he was the inspiration of kids every holidays.

And as the views of society changed, so did these Christmas ornaments. Before, they were simple decorations, now all of them are competing with each other to become the best. Many more resources are used in making them, there are wood, glass, fibers, metal, ceramics and more. And who had not noticed how so many more selections have been created, as there are now mistletoes, snowflakes, Christmas bells, candy canes and stockings.

Perhaps it is true that not all the traditions that we do during Christmas have anything to do with the true celebration behind such season. However, if you think about the original reason behind these traditions, you can see how they are still very important in our lives. Christmas ornaments and their corresponding trees are what we use to symbolize the cheerful feelings that we have every single year, and these feelings are what Jesus really wish for us to have.
